WEST DEVON NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH NEWSLETTER  - APRIL  2008

It has been quite a while since you have had a newsletter due to the retirement of Colin Harris.

As you know NHW is an independent charity and the police work with you, but we do not run NHW.    To assist in reforming a West Devon NHW Forum I organised a meeting last July at Mary Tavy requesting volunteers to sit on the West Devon Forum .   Ten people came forward and they are:-

Mr Brazier                               Mr Street

Mr Cowley                              Mr Whiting

Mr Dumpleton                         Mr Woodley

Mr Masoli                                Mr Burbridge

Mrs Stones                              Ms Lashbrook

Whilst writing this newsletter I would again like to thank them for their contribution to date.

The process of moving the West Devon Forum forward was delayed because the volunteers were happy to give their time to the Forum but did not want to take on the role of Chairman and Vice Chairman.  There were many reasons for this.  Many are already volunteers on other groups and do not have the time, some worried about the commitment and what it would entail.  It was decided that two members of the group would go to the next DACCWA (Devon and Cornwall Community Watch Association) meeting and report back to the group about their experience.

Last week another Forum meeting was held and at that meeting Mr Murray Cowley was nominated as Chairman and Colin Street as Vice Chairman and both have agreed to stand.

(Minutes on the reverse of this Newsletter).

I intend to be very honest in this newsletter and state that at present both have agreed in order to keep NHW in West Devon alive.  Neither are able to do what Colin Harris used to do, but will endeavour to establish themselves in the role and move NHW forward.  This may take time and as their experience grows so will their confidence and knowledge.  I therefore ask that you give them time to adapt to their new role.

I have been asked by several Co-ordinators that they would also like to know more about DACCWA and I will pass this onto the Forum when we next meet on 28th May.  At this meeting I will also be asking if they are happy to give out an email address as a contact point so that Co-ordinators can liaise with them.

I will ask the Forum to put their first newsletter together in June and hopefully this can include any points of interest that have been picked up at DACCWA.

Temporarily, if anyone has anything they would like to put forward to the Forum, you can e mail this to the NHW Support Desk :-Kay.WISEMAN@devonandcornwall.pnn.police.uk

I am hoping that this will be a new chapter in West Devon NHW which will enable us to build for the future.  We would love five more volunteers to come forward and sit on the forum.  The forum would also like to hear from you about what you are doing in your local schemes so that this information can be passed on to inspire other watch groups in West Devon.

I would also like to hear from anyone who is interested in getting involved in projects or willing to volunteer to help at events, or pack up information packs for events etc.   The more volunteers we have the less each has to do.

If you would like to see West Devon NHW become one of the best in Devon and Cornwall, help us to make it happen.

The Forum look forward to hearing from you
