ST. MARY THE VIRGIN, BRATTON CLOVELLY
The present church was
originally built by the Normans on the site of a Saxon church. In the 14th C it
was enlarged but money ran out before the transepts and the western extension
could be built. The rare and magnificent wall paintings are 17th C and are now
cared for by English Heritage. The village stocks are still in the Church Porch.
There
is a Norman Font.Much of the interior of
the church was renovated in the 19th C to a very high standard.
The windows are
very fine examples of 19th C work by
Lavers
and Westlake, London.
There is a matched set of 6 Pennington bells cast in 1767, that are rung regularly.
